Episode Two in the saga of the raised beds! We returned to one of the four beds which we had succeeded, after much effort, at hammering into the ground. After much hot and sweaty work on Saturday, unfortunately the hottest day I can remember for a long time, we succeeded in scraping off the remaining half-dead turf to uncover what I shall term the horror beneath.
This, my friends, is full on unadulterated clay.
Not clay-y soil, clay.
You could make a pot with this.
To any other gardeners out there who are thinking of buying a newbuild property, beware! This is the kind of cut price crap you get hidden below the surface where they think you won’t see it. It was bloody hard work to get a spade through it let alone delicate plant roots.
Anyhow, we powered through, attempting to mix the clay with as much compost as we could. And then we simply filled up the bed. That’s 1 of 4 done! Phew!
