Touts les manges (touts)!

One of the great advantages to having an allotment over a garden is that you get to nose at what everyone else is doing. To a gardening novice this is actually supremely useful – for instance, nobody else has tried growing mange tout on bean poles.

The larger they grow the more it becomes obvious to me why – mange tout plants look nothing like beans, they have absolutely no inclination to cling to bean poles and they don’t seem to really grow that tall. Looking around, everyone else who is growing mange tout have a row of spikey supportive sticks which the plants seem to cling to very well. They also have no gaps in their lines whereas not all of our beans grew, despite putting two beans in every hole. I think next year I will start them off in pots, and soak them first to really get them going.

Oh well, live and learn – next year, spikey sticks. This year, well I’m having to use a lot of twine to attach them to the beanpoles otherwise they seem to fail utterly to grow skywards.

No matter. Still got plenty of beans šŸ™‚
